Wilhelm Berger: A Rediscovered Gem

Mitsuko Saruwatari said: ‘The return of these piano pieces by Wilhelm Berger was a surprising discovery. I found a copy of his rarely produced piano sonata on a website, printed it out and played it. One after the other, beautiful melodies and rich harmonies flowed out of the paper. The solid structure, the harmonizing polyphony, and the tight yet complicated contrapuntal composition proves that he was a composer that understood and controlled all those styles. But that is not all. Irrespective on how well these pieces were written in the late romantic period with great pathos, there are also many subtle and lyrical nuances. The statement is serious and thoughtful, all notes (and there are many) and all voices have functions and expressions. A joy to play and to listen to.
